Excavators are the companies or individuals who send in dig requests to one call centers.
In UtiliSphere an excavator is often added to the system when a company needs to:
- Note that the excavator is non-compliant
- Override the positive response to the excavator contact information from the ticket by allowing you to specify the recipient at the excavator and the method of contacting them (phone, email, fax, SMS text message)
- Add special notes that appear on the Ticket Summary page for the excavator
- On the Excavator Details page, click Modify this Excavator
On the Modify an Excavator / Add an Excavator page, fill in the fields:

The excavator does not see this note about noncompliance.
You can set up Auto Assignment rules based on noncompliance.

An alias is an alternate name for an excavator. The system processes an excavator and its aliases identically. Use aliases to:
- Make the system match all variants of an excavator name by listing those variants as aliases of the excavator (also called normalizing excavator names)
- Add other excavators as aliases of an excavator (See Excavator > Merge Excavator). Merged excavators (aliases) are processed the same way the excavator to which they are merged is processed
The system allows multiple aliases per excavator, but each must be unique.
If alias and zip code are both used, the system will not match the alias to the excavator unless the zip code on the ticket matches the zip code of the excavator.
- On the Excavator Details page, click Add an Alias
- On the Add an Excavator Alias page, fill in the Alias Name
- Click Add
